Mai Thai Cafe – Stillwater, MN
Nov 14th, 2008 by Tim
I really wasn’t in the mood for any of the fast food chains, but didn’t want to stop in Woodbury because then the food would be cold by the time I got to Stillwater. I picked up some gas at the local Super America, for a whopping $1.78/ga and about crapped my pants at that price! Anyways, back on track here, I cruised past the little strip mall that I knew had a sushi place, and thai place in it, I had yet to try. I wasn’t in the mood for sushi, so decided to check out Mai Thai.
Never having been there before, and not seeing a menu posted in the window as I drove up, I did a quick google search, and to my surprise, I found a website (maithaicafe.net).The site itself isn’t all that great, in fact I should send them a mailer for my business, but they did have a complete menu online, so I checked it out, and decided I was going to get the Sesame Chicken.
Those of you that know me, and my fondness for [some type of battered and sauced] chicken, know that it is my standard for any take out places. This place listed the Sesame Chicken as: (white meat not breaded) – Chicken with broccoli, sesame seeds, carrot, baby corn and green onion. – I was decided on this, seeing as I’ve got a busy day on Saturday and didn’t care to have issues in the lower unit.
I went in to order, and of course, my luck, they were OUT of the sauce that goes on the E21 Sesame Chicken. I’m thinking, at 6pm on a Friday night, that it’s a bad time to run out of sauce on your staple meal American’s get from a take out place. Luckily I spotted the chicken [go figure] Pad Thai which was listed as Traditional suateed rice noodles with egg, bean sprouts, green onions and crunchy peanuts.
The meal was ready for me in about 8 minutes, which worked just find for me, and I took it to go. It smelled pretty good, with a little hint of spicy to it. When I ordered, the guy behind the counter asked how spicy I wanted it, and I asked what the levels were. He suggested I choose medium based on the fact their hot was “hot”. I went against his idea and told him to make it hot, I’m not scared.
When I get to my parents place, my truck is smelling of tasty take-out food, the dog wants some and I want some. I take out my yummy meal and lump it out on a plate and dig in.
The first bite was pretty damn good. There was a hint of sweetness at the first bite, the noodles were done to what I would call perfection, and all of the ingredients were mixed in well, with of course the peanuts being sprinkled on top.
After the first few bites the “hotness” of the meal started to catch up with me, however it was not a tasteless burning, but it did have some kick to it. I was quite impressed! Mom grabbed a few forkfuls and was deemed a bit on the hot side for her, but dad really liked it, and they’ll more than likely give the place a try in the near future.
Overall, by the time I emptied my plate, my nose was running, my mouth was quite warm and my belly was full. I will certainly go back and try the Sesame Chicken next time I’m out here, and would suggest you check the place out if you are in the area.
